Happiness fact 61: travel and adventure create memorable experiences

A recent study at Cornell University found that spending money on experiences is more likely to bring you lasting happiness than spending money on material objects. The reason being that people "adapt" to physical objects – meaning the things you've bought will bring decreasing amounts of happiness as time goes on and you get used to having them around – whereas those one-off experiences will be looked back upon with joy that only increases.

So, spending loads of money on a fancy car, or a watch, or a dress, or a phone, or even a house, is not going to bring you everlasting happiness. You'll just become used to those things. That iPad you bought will be amazing when you pull it out of the box, and then boring after it's been played with it for a few weeks, and by the time three or four months have passed you'll be complaining about what a pile of crap it is and looking at ways of upgrading.

Shell out cash on a fleeting experience, however, something as simple as visiting an art gallery, or jumping out of a plane, or eating an amazing meal, and you've just presented yourself with a personal gift that will keep on giving. You won't become sick of the memories; on the contrary, they'll make you happier and happier as time goes on.

Those who've been bitten by the travel bug have known this for a long time. There's nothing you can buy in a shopping mall that can compare to the joy of rocking up in a foreign country and preparing to explore it. There's no house or car fancy enough to be able to top the thrill of being in a place where you don't speak the language and have no idea what to do.

Even the bad travel experiences wind up being good for you. How many times have you found yourself regaling people with your tales of travel gone wrong, like the time you got food poisoning in Mexico, or the time you missed a flight after Oktoberfest, or the time a guy ripped you off in India? And you're laughing about this stuff; you're boasting about it.
If you ever needed a demonstration of the power of experience as happiness, then that is it. Even those nightmare episodes when everything goes wrong tend to be looked back upon fondly. They still make you smile years and years later.

Happiness fact 60: thank you grandpa and grandma!!!

A survey conducted by Oxford University and the Institute of Education in London found that children are generally happier if grandparents are involved in their upbringing.

The research was based on the results of questionnaires with 1,596 children between the ages of 11 and 16 from across England and Wales. Researchers also conducted in-depth interviews with 40 of the children from a range of backgrounds. According to the Oxford study, relationships that adolescents have with their grandparents show that grandparents who are involved in the daily lives of their grandchildren can contribute to the children's well-being.

"We were surprised by the huge amount of informal caring that the grandparents were doing and how in some cases they were filling the parenting gap for hard-working parents," Buchanan said in a statement provided by Oxford.

Most adolescents really welcomed this relationship. What was especially interesting was the links we found between 'involved grandparents' and adolescent well-being.  Closeness was not enough: Only grandparents who got stuck in and did things with their grandchildren had this positive impact on their grandchildren.

Happiness fact 59: happier, less heart disease

"Relationships have stronger associations with happiness than academic achievement, according to a recent study," PsyBlog reports.

"Whilst strong social relationships in childhood and adolescence were associated with happier adults, the associations with academic achievement were much lower." Looking for more evidence that happiness isn't down to fancy degrees.

The lead researcher behind one of the longest-running studies of human flourishing ever (the Grant Study that tracked 268 Harvard grads for more than 75 years), boiled down decades upon decades of data to this conclusion: "Happiness is love. Full stop."

Happiness fact 57: the secret to a blissfull family?

Having two daughters leads to the most harmonious family life, according to a study by the popular U.K. parenting website Bounty.com.

The survey of more than 2,000 families with different combinations of siblings found two girls are most likely to be: well-behaved, play nicely together, easy to reason with, and rarely try to push each other's buttons.

But don't think that more girls means more giggles. "Au contraire: the study included an awesome list, ranking the "Best to Worst Combinations of Kids." Second was one girl and one boy. At the bottom: four daughters, the recipe for the least amount of familial peace.

Happiness fact 52: close relationships result in a happier, healthier life

The researchers followed 724 men, conducting questionnaires every two years, interviews at different intervals and collecting health information every five years. They looked at everything from their personalities, to drinking habits, and even skull shape and size.

What did make all the difference were the men's relationships with others. "Our men found that good, close relationships predicted not only that they would stay happier, but that they would stay physically healthier,"

Happiness fact 28: anticipating vacation boosts happiness for 8 weeks

Researchers from the Netherlands set out to measure the effect that vacations have on overall happiness and how long it lasts. They studied happiness levels among 1,530 Dutch adults, 974 of whom took a vacation during the 32-week study period.

The study, published in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life, showed that the largest boost in happiness comes from the simple act of planning a vacation. In the study, the effect of vacation anticipation boosted happiness for eight weeks.

After the vacation, happiness quickly dropped back to baseline levels for most people. How much stress or relaxation a traveler experienced on the trip appeared to influence post-vacation happiness. There was no post-trip happiness benefit for travelers who said the vacation was "neutral" or stressful."

Happiness fact 8: a happy friend increases our probability of being happy by 9%

The British Medical Journal published a paper describing a study of 4,739 people followed from 1983 to 2003 as part of the famous Framingham Heart Study.
These individuals were embedded in a larger network of 12,067 people; they had an average of 11 connections to others in the social network (including to friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors); and their happiness was assessed every few years using a standard measure.
We found that each additional happy friend increases a person's probability of being happy by about 9%.

Happiness fact 4: less than 6 friends at 45 predicted poorer well-being at 50

Researchers collected data from the British National Child Development Study (NCDS).
This longitudinal study followed a group of people born in the same week in 1958, starting at age 7.
The researchers examined participant surveys collected at age 42, 45 and 50 that included questions about their psychological health and the number of friends and relatives they met up with once a month or more.

Forty percent of men and roughly a third of women said they had more than six friends whom they saw regularly.
Those people were significantly happier than their peers.
Moreover, maintaining relationships is key: "Having fewer than five friends at age 45 predicted significantly poorer psychological well-being at age 50," the researchers write.
